Is The King Tide Of “Seeming” Receding?

23 Sep

I do not agree with many of the views espoused by Herald Sun columnist, blogger, and Channel 10 TV host Andrew Bolt.

I do, however, most wholeheartedly agree with his views on what he has — brilliantly — described as “The Age of Seeming”:

Whenever the general topic of pretentious preening and posturing by those who care more about “seeming” than “doing” arises, I often recall Bolt’s column of December 2nd, 2009.

This, dear reader, is in my opinion one of the best op-eds I’ve ever read.

Period.

In particular, though,  it is one of the best op-eds I’ve ever read that so brilliantly skewers the zeitgeist of our times.

Consider whether anything has changed since Bolt penned these words, nearly four years ago:

The Age of Seeming

THE AIDS ribbons were the first red flag of this Age of Seeming – this great explosion of public sanctimony.

For a long while, no celebrity dared turn up at a big do without wearing that loop of red ribbon to show they cared.

Was a single AIDS patient actually saved by this flaunting of compassion?

Don’t be silly. These ribbons were for advertising the wearer’s good heart, not the sufferer’s weeping sores.

It was weird the way they suddenly vanished. Do edicts on the cause-du-jour get published in Vanity Fair, so the fashionable don’t risk turning up to an event caring about the wrong thing?

How mortifying if Cate Blanchett was the only one in a room of red AIDS ribbons to be wearing the brown ribbon of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

But if red ribbons vanished, this new virus of “consciousness raising” stayed, mutating into ever more offensively reproachful forms.

Only last week, I watched Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and the now deposed opposition leader, Malcolm Turnbull, boast they’d taken the following oath, which they urged all other men to swear, too:

I swear: never to commit violence against women, never to excuse violence against women, and never to remain silent about violence against women. This is my oath.

Pardon? Were Rudd and Turnbull saying it was this oath that now stopped them from belting their wives?

Of course not.

Was their oath likely to be sworn by the kind of men that would?

As if.

Were they telling me to swear it, too, because they think I’d otherwise punch a woman?

How dare they.

So what was all that really about?

Rudd’s smug face told the story. Here was another preening ritual of seeming good without achieving it, while making even the innocent feel accused.

Creepy, yes, but how many such Seeming Ceremonies we’ve had. There was last year’s apology to the “stolen generations” that no one can actually find, and now a sorry to the “Forgotten Australians” for having been removed from lousy parents for their own safety.

What on earth did such sorries achieve? That’s not saying sorry. That’s just blaming someone else (and the wrong people, too), while gloating over your far finer moral feeling.

It’s a seeming contrition, with none of the searing regret of a real one.

But on these Seeming Ceremonies went. They’d dance at Make Poverty History concerts that didn’t raise any money; they’d acknowledge traditional owners whose descendants weren’t present; they’d stage naked protests against fur that attracted only the sticky-handed; and they’d catch jets to signings of accords that only pretended to cut the gases they’d just belched.

Once you had to show your goodness by doing something practical, like slogging through malarial swamps to build a health clinic in a jungle.

Now you do it by jogging with mates to “raise awareness” – which means asking someone else to do the real work.

Maybe the next ribbon should be yellow, so the Seemers can raise awareness of the Doers who have got the rough end of this moral pineapple.

It pleased me greatly this afternoon to see from the above video, that Bolt is continuing to try and bring this topic of “seeming” into the public consciousness.

Perhaps, just perhaps, we may someday as a result begin to witness the king tide of “seeming” receding.

If You Don’t Support An ETS, You Are “Ungodly”: Rudd

28 Jul

Ring of Solomon 01

Two standout observations, for mine, regarding today’s Kevin Rudd interview on Channel Ten’s ‘The Bolt Report’.

First, Rudd’s defence of his failed border protection policy introduced in 2007 was to, in essence, blame the Australian people. How so? By pointing out that we are a “democracy”, and arguing that he was following the “democratic mandate” given by the people at the 2007 election.

Apparently, his designing and spruiking of that policy as a reason to vote for him, before and after the 2007 election, is irrelevant. If enough people were stupid enough to vote for the ALP based on that policy, then its failure is the peoples’ fault.

Second, in defending his planned move to an ETS ahead of schedule, Rudd argued that the reason an ETS failed to be legislated much earlier (in 2009), was due to “an ungodly cabal” of conservatives and the Greens.

Apparently, if you do not support CO2 emissions trading, you are “ungodly”.

Makes one wonder which “god” Rudd serves.

And reminds one of Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein’s claim, that bankers are “doing god’s work“.

Videos of the interview will be available here.

UPDATE:

From the transcript –

ANDREW BOLT: They’re snowing you, Prime Minister. To finish off, in 2007, Labor under you promised to turn back the boats. It promised to stop reckless spending. In 2010 Julia Gillard promised no carbon tax, and a budget surplus. This year all of those promises and a lot more were broken. What are you going to do to make people trust your promises now?

KEVIN RUDD: The first thing I would say is that climate change, building on where we’ve just been in this discussion, is real. It requires action, putting a price on carbon. What I put forward was a floating price way back when – rejected by an ungodly cabal of the Liberals and the Greens. And subsequently, Julia Gillard at the beginning of the last parliamentary term – or this parliamentary term.

G’day,

The most ludicrous thing (apart from the attack on free speech) about this very wrong judgement against Andrew Bolt was that Bolt was never talking about racism nor was he promoting it in the first place.

The fact is that he was promoting the opposite of racism, “UNITY” and exposing what many Australians already are aware of and that is the fact that people who do not deserve to call themselves Aboriginal are doing so even though they are several generations removed from the Original Australian Aboriginal DNA line. That is like me claiming Scottish or Irish or Welsh or German or French or English entitlement just because there is a mix of all these ethnic origins circulating within my bloodstream. I mean, I claim to be an Australian as this is where I was born and hold my loyalty too. My mother cannot help but claim her English heritage as she was born there but she can also legally say that she is an Australian because she was naturalised after she choose to emigrate here … but if my great grandmother had sexual relations with an Aboriginal Australian and a child came of that union and that child turned out to become my grandfather then I can claim Aboriginality and all of the social welfare schemes attached to that claim as much as a true Aboriginal who was born here or parents were born here and the blood line of their family is purely Aboriginal….WHAT THE?

What a deluded mess this has become and clearly many who do not deserve the tax payer funded breaks that they claim for and are simply ripping us ALL off. As Bolt said in front of the court after the verdict was announced, “We should be focusing on the things that UNITE us and not those that divide”. Well Andrew, we need that message to go back in time to at least several decades of political stooges from both major parties who used this form of apartheid (separating the internal population based on racial difference) as nothing more than a vote generator. See how they have created a nation within a nation, with it’s own laws, racial based freedoms and benefits and even a flag. How is that promoting a united nation…. What does the song say? …”WE ARE ONE BUT WE ARE MANY….” Sure we are many but thanks to the abuse of welfare and the creation of the “ABORIGINAL INDUSTRY” we are and will never be one. Mr Abbott TEAR DOWN THIS WALL!!!…… apologies to the late Ronald Reagan.

Incidentally, my brother is married to an Aboriginal woman thus my nieces are both eligible to the claim….. they don’t do it, they work hard and claim nothing. That is being Australian in my book.

Godspeed
Zeg

Unelected, Unaccountable JAFA Garnaut Calls For Unelected, Unaccountable, Unholy Trinity Of Carbon Gods

1 Jun

The Labor/Green/Independent government’s hand-picked, unelected, unaccountable, Solomon Islands strip-clearing, water polluting, gold mining, $5 Million taxpayer-salaried, Grand Poobah #JAFA, Mr Ross Garnaut, has decreed called for a trinity of unelected, unaccountable, unnamed “independent” persons to oversee the totalitarians wet dream Eco-dictatorship.

From the Herald Sun:

Do not give the unelected a power to tax you

One idea in Ross Garnaut’s report to the Gillard Government yesterday must be fought by every democrat.

No, this country must not let its future be decided by an unelected committee.

It’s already bad enough that we’ll get a foolish tax the Government promised before the election not to impose.

But sneaking around the people’s will seems the mission of today’s warmist.

Garnaut, the Government’s global warming guru, yesterday recommended an “independent” committee decide how much we cut our emissions – which, in turn, influences the level of any carbon dioxide tax.

This essentially means unelected people will decide how much to jack up your bills for power and petrol, and everything made with them.

Yes, their call can be overruled by the Government, but the aim is to make a political decision “non-political”.

The Government seems keen on Garnaut’s plan because of the very reason it should never be adopted.

Labor and the Greens are squabbling right now over how much to cut our emissions in their negotiations over next year’s carbon dioxide tax.

Labor wants our emissions cut by much less than the Greens demand, because it fears what voters might do to it once they realise what this useless sacrifice will cost.

But if an “independent” committee made that decision, the Government could claim its own hands were clean. Blame the committee, instead.

This is frankly sold as an anti-democratic move that warmists need.

As one media report approvingly noted: “Garnaut has concluded the only safe way to manage a carbon price going forward is to keep politicians as far away from the process as possible.”

You can punish politicians. Bureaucrats, you can’t. So Garnaut’s plan will leave the policies to people beyond your influence.

That may please Garnaut, but the rest of us should fight.

Already we will get a tax we didn’t vote for. Now we are told the tax will be overseen by people we’ll never vote for.

Protest. Do not surrender your power.

Andrew Bolt is right.

But he misses a crucial point. Because he does not Follow The Money.

Consider.

One of the three gods in Garnaut’s unholy trinity of “independent” regulatory entities, is an “independent” Carbon Bank.

We have looked at this evil idea before (see “Our ‘Squeeze Pop’ Carbon Bank”).

It is nothing more than a ruse to allow banksters – the same people who gave us the GFC – to get their hands on billions of taxpayer’s money right from the start. Even before the move from an initial fixed price “tax”, to a legislated-to-rise “market” priced Emissions Trading Scheme in “3 to 5 years”.

And it is this particular unholy god that will bankrupt the country.

How?

One of the “powers” that the eco-fascists like Garnaut and the peak “clean energy” lobby group want an “independent” carbon bank to be granted, is the power to BORROW against future CO2 tax revenues, and “invest” those borrowings:

An independent carbon bank, similar to the Reserve Bank, should be set up to oversee a carbon price and investment in clean technology, the peak renewable energy lobby says.

The Clean Energy Council will today release a discussion paper proposing the carbon bank, which it says could be allowed to borrow money to invest in renewable energy projects against the future revenue of Labor’s proposed carbon tax and emissions trading scheme.

Note that well.

Borrowing … and “investing” … against the future government tax revenue.

In other words, the government … meaning taxpayers … would be the guarantor for any losses on those “investments”.

In a bankster-designed, multi-trillion dollar, global air-trading derivatives market.

We have all seen just how well things work out for the little people, when governments pass laws that effectively give unelected, unaccountable banksters free reign over markets (and thus, our economy).

It’s time to stand up and be counted.

To take our country back, before the eco-fascist banksters bankrupt us all. Once and for all.
